Students
Students will:
- Meet some of UMSL's most successful alumni & friends
- Gain valuable mentoring on school and career issues
- Have doors opened to new opportunities in their chosen career fields
- Gain a real-world perspective
- Experience practical application of their education
Student Expectations:
- Consider all program communication confidential between you and your mentor.
- Take the lead in scheduling meetings and staying in touch. Establish expectations for communication during your first meeting with your mentor. How often will you be in touch? When should you generally look for a reply from each other?
- Come to meetings prepared!
- Keep every commitment to your mentor. Try not to cancel a meeting even when you travel. (Reschedule as a phone meeting.)
- Follow-up after every meeting. For instance, if your mentor provides you with the name of a colleague to contact, let your mentor know when you have made the call.
- Look for ways to thank and “give back” to your mentor. Remember, he/she is providing time and expertise free of charge. Find ways to thank your mentor. This not only demonstrates your appreciation, but also brings closure to the experience.
- Recognize that the success or failure of your mentorship is not measured by your school and job success. Your mentor only provides suggestions and feedback. If and how they’re implemented is up to you.
- Take responsibility for informing the Alumni Relations Office of any questions or concerns
