Congratulations to our 2022 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipients

Through education, science, information technology and non-profit our 2022 Distinguished Alumni Award winners have left their mark on their respective industries while continuing to support UMSL with their time and talent.  

Their work transforms lives locally in St. Louis, nationally and globally as they drive for change to improve the world around them. The honorees for 2022 are: Shawntelle Fisher BS, BES 2016, Steve Hamilton BSBA 1977, Richard "Dick" Jung BA 1971, Dawn King MS 2012, PhD 2015, Marcela Manjarrez.

 

 

 

 


Shawntelle Fisher

BS, BES 2016

Shawntelle has become one of the top nonprofit leaders in the St. Louis region. As the founder and CEO of SoulFisher Ministries, she helped build and establish a center of hope for women and families impacted by incarceration.  The organization provides workforce innovation and GED programs to help people make the transition to daily life, while reducing recidivism. She received the Gephardt Institute for Civic Community Engagement Award and has been recognized in the St. Louis Business Journal as one of the Most Influential Business Women. She also earned her Master’s in social work from Washington University in St. Louis and a Master’s in Divinity from Eden Theological seminary.


Steve Hamilton

BSBA 1977

Steve began his career as an associate with the law firm Susman, Scherer, Rimmel & Parker and a clerk on the Missouri Court of Appeals after earning his JD from Washington University School of Law. In 1983, he joined CSI Leasing, the largest independent nonbank information technology lender in the U.S., as corporate attorney, eventually rising to general counsel. Beginning in 1999, he led CSI’s international expansion to Europe, Latin America and Asia until becoming president and COO in 2008. Eight years later, he was named vice chairman and CEO, and then chairman in 2018. Throughout his career, Hamilton has hired and mentored UMSL graduates and served on the College of Business Administration Leadership Council for more than 10 years.


Richard "Dick" Jung

BA, 1971

A distinguished educator in both the public and private sectors, Dr. Richard “Dick” Jung began his career as a teacher at University City High School and returned to the St. Louis area as the principal at John Burroughs School. He is an educational reformer with a national reputation and served as a congressional consultant. Throughout his remarkable career as a school administrator he has continued to give his time and talent to UMSL. He served on the Chancellor’s Council, and Pierre Laclede Honors College Leadership Council and helped develop the UMSL in DC Internship program. He holds a doctorate and Master’s from Stanford University and a master’s degree in linguistics from Ball State University. Additionally, he played a key role in reviving a now vibrant UMSL Alumni group in Washington, D.C. and is now working to develop UMSL’s alumni network in Florida.


Dawn King

MS 2012, PhD 2015

Dr. King worked as a postdoctoral associate at Washington University in St. Louis and at Slalom Consulting before taking a position as a Geodetic Earth Scientist at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. She has made significant scientific contributions to the understanding of phase transitions in evolutionary systems and to the use of artificial intelligence for modeling the Earth’s gravitational field.  She remains a champion of UMSL, UMSL alumni and current UMSL students. She mentors students  and regularly speaks to the Physics Club and physics classes. In addition, she has served as a key liaison between UMSL and the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.


Marcela Manjarrez

BS 1998

Marcela, who worked at Centene Corporation as Executive Vice President, Chief Communications Officer, also earned a Masters of Arts in Economics from Washington University in St. Louis. She has more than 20 years of experience in economic research, analysis and strategic communications. She supervised all strategic communications for Centene as well as media and public relations and managed the Centene Charitable Foundation. Prior to joining Centene, she was Vice President of Public Affairs for the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.
